Summer’s here, and with it comes a new set of challenges for your exterior doors and other parts of your home. You have to inspect and maintain your doors more than usual to keep them beautiful and functional during the warmer months. Renewal by Andersen® of Des Moines shares a few tips to do so:
Inspect the Finish
Check the finish around your doors for any signs of water damage, discoloration, cracking wood or paint flaking or peeling. These warning signs indicate that you have moisture buildup, which can be a problem during the hot and humid summer weather. Make sure that your door is properly sealed to prevent energy loss and air leaks.
Make Sure the Locks Are in Good Condition
You should also regularly check your door’s locks and see if they are jammed or loose, or if they don’t lock and unlock smoothly. This can not only decrease your door’s security, but it can also indicate that parts of your door are loose. This can lead to energy leaking from your door and increasing your home’s energy bills. As a French doors and entry doors expert, we recommend calling us for a door replacement if your entry door is damaged or very loose, and if the locks can’t be fixed.
Prepare Your Door
Clean the jambs, and look for areas where mud or dirt cake onto the weatherstripping. In addition, look for areas on the door where the weatherstripping is torn, missing, squashed or stretched. Fix this problem, and then check the door frame for holes or gaps. Find and fill any gaps you find with caulk.
